The indoor system connects to a central ducting system, and through the use of a fan, distributes the conditioned air to each room through floor, wall, or ceiling registers. Since forced air systems are the preferred system for most new construction homes, central air is the most common system found cooling homes in the area— although ductless systems are trending in popularity. Like any forced air system, the quality of your air is dependent on the design and installation of your duct system. Since air conditioning systems actually cool your house by removing heat in your space, you must not overlook your return ductwork. It is critical, then, to capture the heat load properly to keep you cool on the hottest days.

Since all we need to do is mount the indoor and outdoor units with the refrigerant lines, drain, and electricity, you’re looking at a swift installation process. If the two are essentially the same price, but you can get both cooling and heating (base models as low as 5 degrees and advanced models at 15 degrees below zero outside) from a heat pump but only cooling from an air conditioner, why would you not pick a heat pump? Heat pumps in a central system, however, can only work in outside temperatures as low as 25-30, which is not enough heat for regions with blistery winters like New England. Rebates and incentives for central heat pumps are harder to come by, and the equipment can be expensive. If your only fuel source is propane, oil, or electric heat, then you could reduce your energy costs by setting up a hybrid duel-fuel system with a heat pump.

The most common way to heat/cool a home is the forced air system. Whenever we talk about a furnace, air handler, central air conditioner, hydro air system, or a rooftop system we are talking about a forced air system. While they all have different ways of heating or cooling, they all utilize a central ducting system to move the air. The efficiency and comfort you would enjoy with a forced air system, then, heavily relies on the quality of the ducting system. From a load calculation and equipment selection to ducting design and register selection, every detail affects the quality of your forced air system. Unfortunately, many existing systems are not properly sized, sealed, insulated, or laid out to deliver proper air flow; therefore, the quality of your ducting must be considered when replacing your equipment. If there are problems that can be fixed, it is always recommended that you fix them when replacing your equipment so that your new system delivers optimal performance.

A forced water system utilizes a boiler with either a gas or oil burner to heat water. Then the circulator pump moves the heated water through the baseboard registers, radiant heating loops, hydro air system, or some combination of the three to provide heating for your home or business. While these systems are not commonly installed in new construction homes any longer due to large up-front costs, long completion times, and the ease with which central air conditioning systems pair with forced air heating systems, they are still, however, very common in existing homes built over the last 50 years throughout New England. The large cost of converting from forced water to forced air leads many to keep forced water systems in place even when it’s time to replace the boiler. Additionally many high-end homes and estates choose these systems because the benefits and flexibility outweigh the costs, when combined with hydro air.

If you are looking to heat/cool a commercial building where square footage is a premium, then placing your forced air system on the roof may be exactly what you are looking for. Many engineers need to heat/cool large areas but within limited budgets and operational space, so rooftop systems can be the perfect solution. A rooftop system delivers conditioned air via a central ducting system. Often this is accomplished through a gas/electric packaged unit with either side or bottom mounted duct connections that tie directly into the building’s central ducting system. Most add an economizer for more efficiency as well. In large applications you will often see dozens of rooftop units (RTU’s) on a single roof. Each system is connected to its own central ducting system that handles heating and cooling for a specific space of the building. These units are very heavy, so we need a crane to hoist them up or take old ones down.

Like a forced water system, a steam system uses a boiler to heat water; however, instead of heating the water to 180-200 degrees with a typical water boiler, the steam heating system uses a steam boiler to boil the water at 212 degrees. The hot steam that rises as the water burns off is used to provide heat through steam piping and in-room registers for your living spaces. While being virtually non-existent in new construction homes, you will find these systems in older homes, and since steam conversion can be both costly and timely, most people continue to use the building’s existing piping while just replacing their boilers. Very few HVAC contractors even work on steam heating systems, and the ones who do work on them aren’t as familiar with them, so many of the systems are missing critical components needed for efficient operation. We offer two styles of heat pumps — ductless mini-split and central systems (ductwork). Both of these systems use outside air and refrigeration to transfer heat inside your home. Ductless mini-splits are really efficient and operate in a temperature as low as 15 degrees below zero. The indoor units come in several varieties for your floor, wall, and ceiling — which make them perfect for tough retrofits. Central systems are efficient, but their operation caps out in temperatures of 25-30 degrees, so you will need a secondary heating source such as an electric heating element, gas furnace, or hot water coil (hydro air). With both systems, it is critical to properly size the equipment and refrigeration piping, match the models, and install them exactly to manufacturer specifications to avoid stressful call backs.

Get the best from both a forced air and forced water system by combining them in the hydro-air system. It is just like a traditional central air conditioning system with the primary difference being that it has another coil in the indoor unit. Instead of just a refrigeration coil connected to the outdoor air conditioner or heat pump, there is a second coil built in. This hot water coil connects to the boiler through the water piping and allows you to run heating and cooling through a central ducting system. With many options, you can utilize a boiler to heat your hot water with an indirect tank, run a zone for radiant heat in the kitchen and bathroom, run another zone for a space heater in the garage to keep the cars warm, and another zone for a hydro-air unit to provide primary heating and cooling through a central ducting system for the house. This system offers great flexibility for large applications like estates, commercial buildings, or other large properties, and they help reduce the number of fuel burning appliances by running several zones off a single boiler — which leads to lower operational costs each month.

Maybe you have an air conditioner or heat pump, but you don’t have gas lines or oil/propane tanks. Once the temperature outside gets to 30 and below, you will want to have a backup heating source. Without gas or oil, an electric heat kit may be exactly what you are looking for. Some people call these electric furnaces.
